The circumstances leading to the death of an operative of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and a National Youth Service Corps member have been revealed.
The two reportedly drowned in Bayelsa State. It was gathered that the victims drowned after their boat that capsized along the waterways of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.
It was learnt that the unnamed NSCDC personnel was confirmed dead on Wednesday during an operational tour along the Lobia area of the Southern Ijaw waterways.
A report by Punch reveals that the boat conveying the patrol team of NSCDC operatives were said to have collided with another boat during a chase of suspected oil pipeline vandals.
Concerning the drowned corps member, it was learnt that the yet-to-be-identified male was serving at Okpotuwari community in Southern Ijaw before he lost his life in the boat accident.
The accident reportedly occurred about 2p.m on Thursday at a jetty in the community.
Other passengers in the ill-fated boat were reportedly rescued.
Some community sources said the corps member was an indigene of Anambra State.
They said the incident occurred when a local boat conveying them across the river separating two sister communities of Okpotuwari and Ondewari capsized, with all the occupants thrown overboard.
They said while two of the victims were rescued alive by community divers, the corps member got drowned.
They said some corps members had crossed over to Ondewari community and were returning to their base in the ill-fated boat when the tragedy struck.
However, a community source, who did not want to be quoted alleged that the driver of the boat conveying the corps members lost control of the boat on getting close to the jetty due to high sea tides.
He claimed the high current caused the boat to capsize.
He said while the deceased ‘corper’ was unlucky to have drowned before help could come his way, his colleagues were rescued by community folks.
When contacted, the state coordinator of the NYSC, Mr. Anthony Ekeocha, said though he had heard the news through the Southern Ijaw Zonal Inspector, he had yet to get the full detail.
Also, a top officer of the Bayelsa Command of the NSCDC said the operative died when their boat collided with another boat during a chase of oil vandals.
“When the boat collided, the operative fell into the water. And because he could not swim, he drowned before the rescue team arrived, ” the officer, who did not want to be mentioned, stated
